Patristic Quote for the Day

Today, Trinity 19, the assigned Gospel is the healing of the paralytic (Matthew 9). Here's a word from St. Peter Chrysologus on this Gospel:

"Pharisee, in your knowledge you are ignorant, in confessing you deny, when you give testimony you contract it: If it is God who forgives sins, why do you not consider Christ to be God, who by his one work of forgiveness is shown to have taken away the sins of the whole world? 'Behold,' it says, 'the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.' But so that you can receive greater indications of his divinity, hear that he has penetrated the solitude of your heart; see that he has reached the sanctuary of your thoughts; realize that he lays bare the unspoken designs of your heart." - Sermon 50, par. 5
