Old Lutheran Quote of the Day

Theology is interpretation of God's Word and not the exercise of human wit in the field of the divine mysteries. And the Sacrament of the Altar is not primarily a theoretical, doctrinal problem, as some theologians seem to think. Even our orthodox fathers in the seventeen century never forgot that. All dogmatic work concerning this Sacrament, all endeavours to preserve the pure doctrine of Holy Writ on this "sacrament sacramentorum" must have the purpose to help the Church celebrate this sacrament with the deep reverence and devotion we can learn from Martin Luther and from the early Lutheran Church which speaks to us in the confessions and liturgies of the sixteen century still today. -- Hermann Sasse, *Scripture and the Church* pp. 316, 317
