Old Lutheran Quote of the Day

He is born among the beasts of the stall that He might restore to their former dignity and honor sinful men, who through their sins had made themselves little better than the beasts. - Johann Gerhard, *Sacred Meditation XIV*

I'm not at all edified by Gerhard's comments but I will allow for the context of his time.

The beautiful image of the Lord Christ being born among all His creation (as well as his desert sojourn with the wild animals), the humble ox and lamb as well as the shepherd is to me a glimpse of the age to come in which the "groaning creation", dragged down by the Fall will be liberated.

Humans acting "beastly" -- my daily reading of the news tells me otherwise.

It's human sin, period.
