Old Lutheran Quote of the Day

Again, the church is not a school for those who want to take courses either in religion or in morals, but a community of love, the family of God whom He has called to sonship in His Son to whom He has revealed His love and His will for their lives and for the whole world. -- A. C. Piepkorn, *The Church* p. 127

Fr. Weedon,

I hve not read Piepkorn's book but I have a question.

Does he mean that religion and morals are off-limits or that the first purpose of the Church is to engender and embody a community of love from which other things --religion and morals -- can flow?

Pax.

Hi, Omar! I think he means that they are not the true nature of the church's existence - but they certainly may be by-products of that nature. But her true nature is to be a communion of love, the family of God.
