Which always cracks me up, because it is most usually offered in protest of practices that Lutherans in fact did for hundreds of years, but that the current generation is unfamiliar with.

The idea, though, of Christians of one communion responding with: "we've never faced that before" should not be taken as: "we're not going to respond to that." It should rather be: "Let us pray and think about this from the standpoint of our approach to things, which is different from yours. We might be able to offer a different and helpful perspective."

What Schmemann declines to do is to answer the question in the categories from which, he surmises, the question itself arose, and which do not get to the heart of the church catholic's objection that women's ordination. He nails it, though, when he simply observes that our Lord is a man.William Weedonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01383850332591975790noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7291232.post-1151761293218219202006-07-01T08:41:00.000-05:002006-07-01T08:41:00.000-05:00Perhaps the legitimacy of our questions in our own...Perhaps the legitimacy of our questions in our own mind, do not find that same "legitimacy" in the life of the church universal. Likewise, perhaps the answer, "We've never faced this question before" is not a legitimate answer in our own mind, but may be "legitimate".Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7291232.post-1151732002981910602006-07-01T00:33:00.000-05:002006-07-01T00:33:00.000-05:00I wonder how closely the typical Orthodox answer, ...I wonder how closely the typical Orthodox answer, "we've never faced this question before," is related to the similar Roman Catholic answer -- "we've never done it that way before."Rev.
