I usuall...Jen,<BR/><BR/>Depends on what you are looking for. I usually encourage my folks NOT to use commentaries, but to read more of the Sacred Scriptures. They have a way of unfolding themselves the more they are read, prayed and believed. Best commentary on the whole of the Scripture is the Book of Psalms. It's the Bible in miniature.<BR/><BR/>I've never found commentaries terribly helpful because they tend to answer all the questions I wasn't asking and ignore the questions that I do have! <BR/><BR/>So aside from READING more of the Sacred Scriptures, next best commentary: the Church's liturgy and hymnody; the Church's Confessions (for us, the Book of Concord). My favorite commentary on a specific Biblical book is Luther's Great Galatians commentary; second is Melanchthon's Roman's commentary. <BR/><BR/>I know that's probably not what you were looking for, but it is an honest answer.
