I bow down to Thee, O Master; I bless Thee, O Good One; I beseech Thee, O Holy One; I fall down before Thee, O Lover of Mankind; and I glorify Thee, O Christ, for Thou, O Only-begotten Master of all, O Only Sinless One, wast, for the sake of me, an unworthy sinner, given up to the death of the cross in order to free the soul of a sinner from the bondage of sin.
And how shall I repay Thee, O Master?
Glory to Thee, O Lover of Mankind!
Glory to Thee, O Merciful One!
Glory to Thee, O Longsuffering One!
Glory to Thee, Who forgivest every fall into sin!
--St. Ephrem the Syrian, *A Spiritual Psalter* #2
I always love the prayers of St. Ephrem.

Fr. Weedon,
ReplyDeleteI ordered a copy of "A Spiritual Psalter" some time ago after seeing you quote it a few times in your blog. I highly recommend it also. How insightful his prayers our in regard to our state and our relation to God! They are beautiful. I try to pray one of his prayers every day, and when I finish the "Psalter" I start over. Good stuff. What an inexhaustible treasure trove!

Fr. Cota and Deb,
ReplyDeleteCouldn't agree more with both of you. St. Ephrem is a treasure trove indeed! He takes you into the depths; he leads you to the heights. He is fearless in looking at his own sin and utterly faithful in looking at the Savior!
