In the Divine Service, Christ is not only the host who gives his very body and blood for the banquet, he is also the preacher. He speaks through his ambassadors, not only in the sermon, but also in the readings. Just as the writings of the prophets and apostles once bridged long distances to bring God's message to his people, so they bridge the span of time to bring that prophetic and apostolic Word to us. Not only do Jeremiah and John still speak, but the Lord still speaks through them whom he called as his messengers. - Introduction to *Lutheran Service Book: One-Year Lectionary*
