Today the Holy Church throughout the world remembers the beheading of St. John the Baptist, so that the Lord's forerunner on earth was also His forerunner to the dead, announcing that He who was the Defeat of Death was now in flesh and blood and soon coming to release all and bring them the grace of Resurrection.
St. Paul's, Hamel, will observe the day with Vespers at 5:30 and the Divine Service at 6:00 p.m.
Readings: Rev 6:9-11 / Rom 6:1-6 / Mark 6:14-29
Collect: Sancti Joanis Baptistae Praecursoris et Martyris tui, quaesumus, Domine, veneranda festivitas: salutaris auxilii nobis praestet effectum: Qui vivis... (Take that, CPH!)
Maybe you should compile a companion volume to LSB in Latin! ;-)
ReplyDeleteI like the idea!!!!
ReplyDeletePerhaps you could post it in PigLatin for those of us swine who don't know the real thing.

Now, Josh, I've never had a Latin class in my life. But I'm always surprised how far I can get on with a good dictionary and some online helps. Since you've done both Greek and Hebrew, I'll bet you'll find Latin to be not nearly such a tough beast to tame either. Especially when the matter is liturgical (with its relatively small vocab!). And best of all, when you get stuck, they're lots of people you can write for help. I try not to hit the same ones up over and over, but there's: John Nordling, Robert Schaibley, Lee Maxwell, and several others. And they mostly LOVE to answer Latin questions because they just love the language. So I never agonize over anything too long. If it isn't clear to me after a few minutes, I shoot it off to an expert! : )
ReplyDeleteA good way to learn or refresh Latin is one of the LatinStudy groups at http://www.quasillum.com/study/latinstudy.php . I had 2 semesters of Latin in college, but managed to lose a lot of it, so I went thru one of the Wheelock's groups to bring it back.
