Snow is coming down - finally! We'll see how long it lasts and how much. Right now it's really snowing and blowing. School was cancelled today. Winkel was cancelled today. School board was cancelled tonight. David had to go to the University, but he called a bit ago and said he was coming home. He just pulled in so I'm breathing a sigh of relief. Guess we'll huddle together at home against the cold - delightful.
With the day and evening opened up, I think I'll take some time to read Luther's and Gerhard's homilies for this Sunday, and also read more in Gerhard's *Explanation of the Sufferings and Death of our Lord Jesus Christ* in preparation for preaching the Passion during the Lenten midweeks.
But, Pastor Weedon, do remember that those old Lutherans simply did not understand how properly to preach Law and Gospel. They had a really bad habit of bringing up our life of good works *after* they had preached the Gospel.
ReplyDeleteNo doubt, you'll overlook their many faults and still find something of value in their sermons.
I am so jealous. I am way north of you and we have had diddly squat for snow the last few weeks, even though it has been way cold (so much for "global warming"). Let it snow, I say! I love winter!
ReplyDeleteFr. Cota,
ReplyDeleteIt really didn't amount to much, though it only stopped snowing a few minutes ago - so almost 12 hours of snow. But it is windy and drifting right now. I've got to be down to St. Louis for a surgery by 7 in the morning and am really hoping that they can manage to keep the roads clear!
For me - much as I love snow, I confess I'm ready for Spring.
"Spring is sprung; de grass is riz;
I wunder where de daisies is?"
I am fully convinced that in Paradise there would have been perpetual spring without any winter, without snow and frosts, such as we have today after sin.
ReplyDeleteLuther, Lectures on Genesis, 1:144.
Of course, as we sing in the third chapter of Daniel, even the frost and snow praise the Lord:
ReplyDeleteBenedicite gelu et frigus Domino.
Benedicite glacies et nives Domino.
LHG
My love for snow and winter must then show how fallen my nature truly is! Although, like John Donne, I think that paradise would be more like an everlasting fall, where everything is at the ripest and ready for harvest.
ReplyDeleteThe Saint Louis cathedral, which everyone MUST go see if/when they have a chance--it is the largest, by far, display of mosaic in North America and one of the largest in the whole world--I am not exagerrating, you MUST go see the place to believe it---anyway...there is a depiction of hell as people being led into an ice-covered frozen place. It is very interesting.
ReplyDeleteApparently Fr. Cota will enjoy perdition. Not that any of us had any doubt. ;-)
