If a dog makes you feel good because it looks to you as its god, is it sinful? I mean, is this another example of "You shall be like God?" Nothing makes us feel better than having our sinful nature puffed up (that's why I prefer cats, they will definitely not puff up the ego! ;)
I think you guys are wrong about the dog. The dog is great for the same reason the cat is: it doesn't talk. It's just there. And I think when sadness visits, you just don't feel like talking or listening. And the dog is just perfect for that.
Then there's the little book by Roald Dahl, "The Vicar of Nibbleswicke." The poor Vicar has a case of dyslexia and blesses people in the name of Dog Almighty.
There was an article in today's NY Times re the recent popularity of books about animals. Included was this quote from Aldous Huxley: "To his dog, every man is Napoleon. Hence the constant popularity of dogs."

Pr. Will,
ReplyDeleteWhy no companion like that of a dog?
Because he looks at you as his hero, for him you can never do wrong, he won't criticize, he won't judge, he is just there to look up to you.
Did you ever notice that this animal looks at you straight in the eye?
Lito
It's because a dog, seeing all you do for him, thinks you are God.
ReplyDelete(Whereas a cat, seeing all you do for him, concludes SHE is God!)

Anastasia,
ReplyDeleteI heard it stated this way...
You come home you do things for your dog, he winds up thinking you are God.
You come home you do things for your cat, she winds up thinking she is God.

Since this has become a theological conversation.....
ReplyDeletePerhaps the dog is God delighting in created humanity as "very good" and gazing in wonder at humanity restored in Jesus Christ.

ReplyDeleteI enjoy scuba diving with my cat.

The foregoing comments remind me of the insomniac, agnostic, dyslexic who stayed up all night wondering if there was a dog.
