Let us find the reality of Calvary, of love, by the way of the Altar. There we can again touch the wounds of Christ; and by touching the wounds of Christ, we shall touch the wounds of the world” (The Presence, 91).

Von Schenk again
This time, via Asburry (he has a great sermon up on his blog that he delivered yesterday at Matins for the Missouri District Pastoral Conference):
"At the Altar is the cresset where we get our fire of the Calvary Love. How this love is needed! We have lost much of it. We have to invent all kinds of methods to attract the people. We must advertise, we must entertain. Why? Because the Church has lost its way to the Altar it has also lost its way into the heart of the world. For the pure love of Calvary alone can save the world. It is that love for which the world is aching. But we must first recapture it ourselves.
Let us find the reality of Calvary, of love, by the way of the Altar. There we can again touch the wounds of Christ; and by touching the wounds of Christ, we shall touch the wounds of the world” (The Presence, 91).

Where did you get your copy of The Presence? I always quote Von Schenk on the Altar as the "trysting place" where we meet our beloved departed in the greater communion of saints.

ReplyDeleteRandy has a copy from the sem library - BUT I decided to see if I could find one, and so I googled it and bought one off of ebay, believe it or not. I can't wait for it to arrive! It was $34, I think, and signed by Von Schenk. I am looking forward to reading the whole thing!
ReplyDeleteDr. David Scaer has a review of "The Lively Stone" in the latest CTQ, which is technically dated for a year ago, though it just came out yesterday or today. The review doubles as a short biography of von Schenk/Scaer reminiscing about their connections.
ReplyDeleteSeems to me that ALPB said they were going to publish a new edition of "The Presence," but they still haven't. Then again, "Lively Stone" isn't available at the CTSFW bookstore either.
In my first CN in a year or so, Herman takes Von Schenk to task. I must admitt that if he is favorable to the Atlantic District, I'm suspicious. What are your thoughts?
ReplyDeleteKarl
Read him with discretion, Karl. That's always the key. When he's right, he's beautifully, wonderfully right. And when he's wrong, he's still worth learning from. That's how I approach him.
