Tonight we sang together Compline for the last time till after Easter. Wednesday nights will comprise Vespers and then refreshments (rather than Eucharist, Bible Study, Compline) during Lent, except that next Wednesday - Ash Wednesday - the Divine Service will be celebrated in the evening instead of Vespers. It feels downright weird to "give up" Compline for Lent, but I AM looking forward to the Passion Vespers. Still, I'll be eagerly waiting until we sing: "Guide us waking, O Lord..." once again.
Just curious, are you saying that you normally have the Lord's Supper every Wednesday and then during Lent you give it up?
ReplyDeleteOddly enough, YES. The parish expressed a strong desire to retain Vespers for the Wednesdays of Advent and Lent; so we suspend the midweek Eucharist during those seasons and encourage everyone to attend the Vespers instead.

Interesting. I thought my parish "compromised" Vespers, but it was only the poorly sung liturgist's parts............
I think you want the word "comprise."

Thanks, Luke. FIXED.
ReplyDeleteHow about Wednesday, March 25th (the Annunciation)? Will you be celebrating mass on this day?
ReplyDeleteMass for Annunciation will be offered in the morning; Vespers will continue the Passion.
ReplyDeleteSounds rather, well, Orthodox...

Has anyone ever asked to keep the Supper? At Zion here in Fort Wayne, we have the supper after the Vespers service is complete. Interesting!
ReplyDeleteNot so far...
