This may be a well-known fact, but it was news to me ... I recently found out that the Pieta-form is intended as the other "bookend" to Nativities ... i.e. the newborn Christ on Mary's lap at one end of his life, the dead Christ on her lap at the other. I find this makes it all the more meaningful ...
