Well, I've always tried to keep this blog quite open for discussion and have had a very liberal policy when it came to comment moderation. I'll still try to keep it relatively open, but here's fair warning. All comments now will be moderated before being posted and:
1. I will no longer allow comments that I consider rude or disrespectful.
2. I will no longer allow comments that attack the Lutheran Church or our Confession of the faith.
As a friend of mine is wont to say: satis est. Totally.
I am at a loss to know what provoked this. I've considered this to be one of the more "civilized" sites, as far as comments go, already.

I think it's a good move. I've felt lately that Pr. Weedon, to his good credit, has been overly generous in letting some commentators attack him &, more importantly, the Confession of the Faith.
ReplyDeleteAs someone who recently became part of a moderator council on a blog, I have a much greater appreciation for the opportunity & unfortunate necessity to moderate comments.
And finally, this is Pr. Weedon's blog. He's free to do with it as he pleases. If anyone doesn't like how he runs it, they're free to not read it.
Thanks, Pr. Weedon. Keep up the great work!
Good for you. I recently read comments on your blog between two LCMS pastors. They were petty and un-Christian like in my opinion (one more guilty than the other). Not only were they disrespectful to each other, but a poor reflection on the LCMS as a whole. Pastors should know better.
ReplyDeleteOverall, I find your site uplifting and educational. I thank you for your efforts!

Fr. Weedon,
ReplyDeleteI am not trying to be difficult, but what exactly constitutes attacks on the Lutheran Church and her confessions? I ask with all sincerity and I'm not trying to find some "line" which I would then touch but not cross.
I must admit that I am disappointed by this move. I've always found your blog to be very courteous, though, no doubt, contentious about some serious dogmatic, theological, scriptural, spiritual and pastoral issues. I fear that with the addition of comment moderation (not that I fear you would be a good judge) there will be less good honest debate because some will not be willing to post here for fear their comments will not be heard.
But, it is your blog, and you can do with it as you please.
Chris,
ReplyDeleteLike the judge about porn - hard to define, but I know it when I see it. I certainly do not want to discourage a respectful conversation between Christians who may not hold the same confession; but it needs to be done in a respectful way, not in a manner that is pathologically rude and deliberately offensive. Hope that makes sense.
I admit that I am more often than not a total ego-maniac and always assume things, especially bad things, are about me. If any of my comments to my brother, Paul McCain, illicited this comment moderation or the comment by James in this line of comments, I again humbly apologize. One of the really great things about that exchange is that we disagreed, like jerks, but we reconciled like real brothers. Again, though, if my rash and rude comments offended anyone other than Pr. McCain, my apologies to them as well.
ReplyDeleteJim,
ReplyDeleteI did almost delete the exchange, but it had a good outcome. It's the sort of thing that I probably will not allow to be posted in the future, though it was not the cause of turning moderation on.
You know, I have never really talked to Paul before. I felt so badly that I had offended him (he does do a good job and so does CPH) that I called him too. We had a great conversation and I am very thankful that your blog facilitated that.
ReplyDeletePr. Weedon, I'm saddened by this - first that your blog is not open for free discussions and second that you feel yourself and your faith have been attacked.
ReplyDeletePraying for you always,
Emily
