Here's a picture from an old Danish altar, done in the 16th century. HT: Cyberbrethren. Note that Christ crucified stands in the center as the source whence the sacraments flow, and that the preacher opens the Sacred Scriptures to point us toward the Crucified Lord.

ReplyDeleteI hasten to note that two of my ever-vigilant readers spotted a bit of mischief in the high-resolution version of the painting, the one you have on your site now.
ReplyDeleteSomebody Photoshopped Luther's head on to the preacher's body!
The original is not Luther preaching. Apparently a Dane got a tad carried away.
At any rate, just so you know.
This can't be Lutheran -- the communicant is taking the host on the tongue, there's no instruments or musical group on the altar, whoever the preacher is he's up in a pulpit, the celebrant has a chasuble, you ain't foolin' me!
