Right before sunset

I noticed some color in the sky (other than leaden gray). But it rapidly disappeared. Now we're swathed in fog again. This has been one of the dreariest winters I EVER recall. Where is the powder blue sky of winter that we associate with these days? It's been like November gray from October till now. Still, Cindi got a treat today. She pulled in from her workout to see a splash of color in the yard: two red foxes. They hung around a bit and eventually headed down the Church road toward a neighboring farm. I remember several years back watching one trot down the road in broad-daylight. Well, there was no "broad daylight" today in the St. Louis area, but the foxes were out all the same. Wish I'd seen Mr. and Mrs. Maynard myself.

Yesterday afternoon about 4 pm I drove over to Worden to pick up my nephews and as we came down the church we no doubt saw one of the pair that were in your yard. This one was a male and showed little fear being only 5-10 ft away. We have a family of Red Fox that frequent our place on a weekly basis. Their activity level has been very high over the last month with the Snow cover and scarcity of food.

Over the 10 years we have lived out here the Fox and our Beagle Bella have developed quite the relationship... it is very positive for both The Fox enjoys the Chase (knowing Bella will never catch him or her) and Bella gets to reignite her natural sense of purpose as a hound dog ie. yipping howling raising her hair on her back etc. and yes chasing something she will never catch!

Interesting. This has been one of my favorite winters ever. We have some great parks in the Minneapolis area and I have been out and about enjoying God's creation. Our newest saint, St. Favre of Hattiesburg, has brought football joy to the Upper Midwest.

I know that you have been following the music which I post on my blog. I am now posting music and my Lutheran reflections on a new blog which I call Lutheran Colportage.

  3. It's been foggy around here for most of the past week, and I love it. It is just so gloomy and mysterious. It gave me an excuse to learn about London with my seven-year-old.

Well, having the good fortune to have a large "picture" window at work I am amazed to see a clear blue sky, the horizon filled with light and even Lake Erie looks calm and benign.

Perhaps our reward for the miserable couple weeks of cold and snow earlier in January.

Hearing about foxes reminds me of a delightful program I saw about a sanctuary where injured wild animals are rehabiliated. One occupant was a little female fox who would spend her days in an outdoor pen. She eventually caught the attention of a male fox who came daily to visit. When she had healed, on the day of her release the male came by and they happily scampered away together.

There have been many stories of domestic dogs playing with foxes, coyotes and even wolves.

How right the Psalmist is, "In wisdom You have made them all, the earth is full of your creatures."
