In German, Greek, Latin and Russian the traditional Easter greeting and response roll off the tongue very naturally. In English, the greeting does but the response sounds somewhat artificial: “He is risen indeed!” – who talks like that? I would be delighted if someone came up with a way of saying it in a more natural way for the English speaker. “Indeed He is!” or “He sure is!” or even “Indeed He is risen” are some of the variants I have thought about, but I would be happy if someone came up with a really smooth way of saying it. Or am I making a mountain out of a molehill?
Well...also another molehill...I have read where the more accurate translation of "Alithos" is "truly" as opposed to "indeed"...of course there is related rationale which I do not recall at this time but in the Greek Church in English speaking America the response is "Truly He is risen!". Unfortunately that doesn't roll off the tongue any better, I am afraid. Regardless, my hope is a joyous Feast of Feasts for all!
Alithos anesti!
ReplyDeleteHe is risen indeed! Alleluia!
ReplyDeleteKristus er opstanden! Ja, sandelig opstanden!
ReplyDelete(Danish, the mother tongue of my congregation.)
Christ is Erstanden! Wahrlich Erstanden! Alleluia!
ReplyDeleteAtgyfododd Crist!
ReplyDeleteAtgyfododd in wir! Aleliwia!
One more for good measure:
ReplyDeleteKristus ir augšāmcēlies!
Patiesi viņš ir augšāmcēlies! Aleluja!
Христoсъ воскрeсе! Воистину воскресе!
