You got that right, MDR! But when we were in WI it was even worse. Sure, school didn't start until after Labor Day - but then we didn't get out of class until JUNE 13. That was terrible.

When I was a kid, every school started after Labor Day weekend. What is this snow day crap now? I grew up in Minnesota and don't remember a "snow day" ever.
"Summer" comes from the Norse god Sumarr, "Winter" from Vetr, and even Wotan (Odin, Oden) had to ask where they came from and called them the first of the Wise Powers.
There is astronomical Summer and meteorological Summer and Summer Vacation Summer.
The one extends from Summer Solstice (20 or 21 June) to Fall Equinox (22 or 23 September. The other is based on average temperature and is June through August in the northern hemisphere. Summer Vacation is whenever in the hell your school board, true heirs of Sumarr, says it is

Where I grew up we also started after labor day, but we did regularly go to late in June.
ReplyDeleteThis is western Oregon - we faint if there's snow! And too many drivers on the road who have no idea how to drive in snow.
