Totally sold

on preaching from the iPad.  Did it first at Higher Things, then for Imogene's funeral, and again tonight.  Much easier to read (I set it to BIG point in the type) and backlight makes it absolutely irrelevant whether the light in the room is adequate for reading or not. A swipe of the finger is much easier than turning a page and much less conspicuous.  I should have been doing this for months already...

  1. I've been doing it for months and I'm never going back. They tend to be better sermons, too.

  2. How do you do it? Load a PDF, Word Document, or something else?

  3. I write the sermon in Pages on the iPad (shooting for around 1300 words); I email it to myself so I can archive it on my laptop.

  4. Ditch the manuscript in the pulpit and you won't have to use any gizmos.

  5. Will, I read your first impressions of the iPad back when you got yours. I think you said that you saw it as a nice toy with maybe some productivity benefits. I'm curious what your impressions are now after having it a while.

I just got mine recently...and I LOVE having things like TLSB, BofC, TDP, and Luther's Works via Logos all on one handy device. I serve a dual parish and shuttle back and forth between the two congregations...so nice to not have to lug around books...or even my laptop. I'm hoping to store most of my files digitally on here as well and once iCloud comes around this fall, it will all be stored safely where not even fire can destroy them.

Plus, Paul said a while back that the Pastoral Care Companion is in the works for iOS. Looking forward to using only the iPad for shut-in visits...although I'm concerned that some of my older members might think I'm a nut for reading the Scriptures to them from a screen. =)

  6. Oh yeah...I would use my communion set for shut-in visits as well. =)

  7. Matt,

I've actually found it to be rather useful - though I go back and forth as to whether it's worth it to carry the iPad on visits when iPhone does the same stuff. I definitely like the iPad for meetings - very nice indeed.

  8. I have the teleprompter app, but have been a bit reluctant to use it. Maybe next week... I'll let you know.

  9. It's so funny to see this post. I had the strangest dream (nightmare?) a couple of weeks ago. We were in church and you were doing the entire liturgy from your iPad. The alter book was gone. At first you were wearing your vestments, but when you turned around, you were wearing a dirty t-shirt, worn out cargo shorts and flip-flops. Frankly, I prefer the vestments.

  10. It's the triumph of The Screen! Even where resisted in the sanctuary, it's on the pulpit!

  11. What would you do if the iPad freezes mid-sermon? Maybe it's similar to realizing that you've left a page of your manuscript in the office?

I have to say that that is one of the biggest concern for me regarding preaching from an iPad. The other is the creepy glow your face would have during an evening service! Also, having some iCal notification chime or something of that nature.
