Fasting as discussed in the article is not fasting in its religious meaning. Restricting caloric intake for two days is coupled with doing what you want the other five. Fasting religiously is to undertake a physical discipline to better live as one who does not do what one wants on any days.
Sounds like there's more wisdom to the "Daniel diet" than meets the eye:)
