Luther and Lewis

For who can harm or injure a man who has this confidence, who knows that heaven and earth, and all the angels and the saints will cry to God when the smallest suffering befalls him?—Martin Luther, Sermons on Jn xvi-xx, 1528

Those who know the Tao can hold that to call children delightful or old men venerable is not simply to record a psychological fact about our own paternal or filial emotions at the moment, but to recognize a quality which demands a certain response from us whether we make it or not.—C.
