Christian Gerber in his work on Saxon Church Ceremonies - late 1700's, I think - complained about the continued use of the bells at the consecration (and he also complained about chanting the Verba and asked why we couldn't just speak them like the Catholics do!).
I figured it's not every day someone dies, rises, saves you, then is right there on the altar, so heads up people!
Well, it was every day, but you get the point.
As long as we're getting back into all this stuff, anybody game for lighting the Paschal Candle in total darkness in the back of the church and intoning the first "Lumen Christi"?
We do too - though we intone in English! Vigil is one of the most wonderful liturgies of the whole year. From darkness to the Light no darkness can overcome!

Me like! Smoke the devil out, I say!
I always enjoyed the Epiphany service at Seminary...
Up until I woke up the next day with stuffed nasal passages and feeling sick to my stomach.

Really?? I thought only a rogue Lutheran parish in Detroit regularly had a smoking section. ;)
Maybe more should be "ablaze with smoke." :)
We had smoke at Christmas, Fr. John. Sadly, we don't have it often, but having it at all is a step.
Fr. Fenton... I go to that rogue parish in Detroit. ;)
I'm glad you liked that one Pr. W. :)
Hi Fr. Fenton: I have heard there is a rogue WELS parish in Belleville that has experimented.

You kidding me? I was stoking thuribles as far back as I can remember damn near.
If we get the smells, can the bells be far behind? Mine was three bells on a common handle -- symbolism AND volume!

Don't be sad, Pastor Weedon. Novus ordo Catholics hardly have it either.

Sorry, but with my asthma and allergies the incense smoke would probably kill me if we started using it.
I used to ring those bells like a sunny gunny.

Past Elder,
We do every year at the Easter Vigil Mass. LCMS parish, BTW.

We do the English as well ... but who knows? Perhaps one day it'll be the Latin. ;-)
I look forward to the Vigil all year!
