The church where the chrism Mass was held is my home church when I am in NYC. Redeemer is a fantastic church with a great pastor and congregation. It is also growing by leaps and bounds through an emphasis on high liturgical worship and catechism. Having said that, it is an interesting mix, in that it also has liturgical dancers and female "Eucharistic ministers" and other things most Mid-Western confessionals would find anathema (including myself!). Great congregation though!

Oops, should be catechesis

I'm surprised by the starkness of the sanctuary. This is not a judgement, just an observation.

They took down statuary (sp?), banners, and other art for Lent and cover the crosses and crucifixes.

All he needs is a pointy hat! Whence comes the prayers for blessing the oils? I don't recall that one in the new LSB Altar Book, although at over 1,ooo pages, I might have missed it.

These are the most confusing photos. I should not really be surprised because this ceremony is traditionally to be on Thursday but for some reason was pushed ahead to Tuesday. What an incredible mix of "things." Did you notice the band at the back? The band are the only people not dressed in white, stole, chasuble or alb? (poor woman, she looks underdressed)
It is all so confusing.

Ive never seen a Lutheran with a hand cross... not there is anything wrong with it.
Are there any DPs who wear mitres? It seems kind of weird to go all the way with the rest of the vesture, but leave that out.

Also, why did Pr. Taylor switch stoles?

I'm not aware of any who wear mitres, and this is also the first hand cross I've noted. Have no idea about the stoles.

Do you think Pres. Benke is going to leave the LCMS for Orthodoxy?

William Weedon said...

Goodness, no. He's a convinced Lutheran - and so he's evangelical catholic in his approach to things.

But the incense! The hand cross! The oils!

It seems like this fits McCain's formula for sure convert to Orthodoxy.

I believe the hand cross in fact belongs to the Redeemer congregation and not to Bishop / DP Benke and so he was conforming to local custom. I believe the shepherd's crook is also Redeemer's. Pastor Taylor leaves the nave after the service with the crook in one hand while continually blessing the congregation with the sign of the cross with the other. And no, Taylor is certainly not going to convert to Orthodoxy! :)
