What earthly joy remains untouched by grief?
What glory stands forever on the earth?
Frail shadows - all, delusive dreams;
Which death will one day sweep away.
But in the light of Your countenance, O Christ,
And in the enjoyment of Your beauty,
Give rest to those whom You have chosen and taken
For You are the Lover of mankind.
--St. John of Damascus, Friday Evening Aposticha Verse

Pastor Weedon,

Sal,
Yes, indeed. The most important week in the history of humanity! The week that Love Incarnate was rejected and murdered, forgave the human race and lived again - destroying him who had the power of death - and bringing life and immortality to light.
Glory to Your cross, O Lord, and to your resurrection!
Brother Weedon,
I wonder if we even understand what JESUS has done for us. Eleven denied HIM and one betrayed HIM BUT HE stayed faithful "for us". I find this so comforting! Even the concept and truth, "son of God" really mesmerizes me. Some times I think that the whole Bible is so outside of me and that I watch it "play" as I think about this or I hear this preched "to me". It's God's story "to us, by CHRIST".This brings so much strengh "to me" and LOVE for GOD!
Always "in need".
Sal
I really like this.
Did St. John write this as a poem, or is it just translated that way?
