I speak of the 'Mediator between God and men, himself man, Christ Jesus.' For it is as man that He is the Mediator and as man that He is the way. Where there is a way between a traveler and his destination, he can hope to reach it, but, if there is no way or if he does not know which way to take, what is the good of knowing the destination? Now, there is one way and one way alone that can save us from all aberrations, the Way which is both God and man - God as the goal and man as the means to reach it. - St. Augustine, City of God, Book XI, chapter 2
