So as part of my

new Cheetah! lifestyle (FPU joke), I "upgraded" my phone contract to get out of $30 per month data access fee that is built into the iPhone.  I still have my iPhone, but use it just as an iPod - leaving it in airplane mode.  But the new Samsung phone I got is fantastic.  I charged it last time on Wednesday night, and it JUST ran out of juice.  Now that's sweet - six days worth of use, a bit heavy use at times too.  So, better battery life, a very nice phone, and $30 per month less.  YES.  I confess that it is a relief not to have email following me around.  I could get that feature on this phone, but purposefully chose to block internet access so it's just a phone.  So now I only deal with email when I'm sitting in front of the computer and not when I'm trying to enjoy dinner out with my wife!

Congratulations! When I needed a new phone recently, I was hoping I could get an unlocked Android phone and use it without the data plan. I found out, first, that it's hard to do because the cell phone companies want to make all the $ they can; and second, there's no sense in spending anything on a phone when my iPod Touch still works. A young, wise man in my congregation told me: "Having an extra pocket will save you $30 a month."

Thanks, Ben. Smart man there i your parish. :)

I also found out that I could get a cheaper DirecTV option than any listed on the web - I had to call them and talk to them, but I ended up saving about $30 per month on that too.

Amazing how we just let these companies take the money right out of our pockets! I'm glad FPU opened my eyes to this nonsense.

Nice. About 3 months ago I also went back to using a Day Timer rather than recording calendar events digitally. I also found that having "instant email" all of the time on the phone was adding to my stress level, as it continually is filled my inbox.

I have a BlackBerry, but pretty much just use it for the phone feature. When my contract is up in July, I'm going back to a simple phone.

John,

I've gone back to my paper AAL calendar - free and more than enough space to note appointments... You'll not regret the retrograde on the phone.

I'm going against the grain. I just got my first smartphone after (to my surprise) developing the reputation for being "anti-tech".

I don't have a problem ignoring emails because frankly I don't receive that many. I don't have a problem ignoring texts because the only one who texts me is my wife, and then only once or twice through the day. On the other hand, I LOVE the GPS, the online music and the web browsing and of course, non-stop on demand Issues etc anytime, anywhere!

I have a Samsung phone. It's solidly built, the menus make sense, and it's got a classy hard black plastic exterior that has held up well. I'm 18 months into my contract and it still looks new. I love it.

Wouldn't mind having web access so I could get to my Google Calender on the go, but I don't need that enough to justify that $30/ month data package or a more expensive overall plan. Besides, then I'd have to switch to a smart phone, and I like my Samsung flip phone.

You may be able to get some web access without a smart phone for less money. My wife's phone has a web option for I think ten bucks.

Good for you Pr. Weedon. I have worked in the tech industry for years and I will not add email or texting to my cell phone plan. I get far too much email as it is sometimes and if anyone needs to get a hold of me I prefer to hear a voice or see a face over an email any day.
