New Lutheran Quote of the Day

By His priestly sacrifice we are priested not to offer sacrifices for our sins - He has done that - but to offer ourselves, no longer forfeited to death by our sins, but alive by the forgiveness that delivers us from the dominion of sin, death, the devil and the Law.  We are living sacrifices whose lives are poured out in sacrifice to Him where He has put Himself to receive the sacrifice of our lives, that is our neighbor in his need. -- Dr. Norman Nagel, CTM Vol. 61, No. 4, p. 280.

Dear Norman,

I am honored indeed to have survived the cull.

Better watch that sacrifice terminology, Fr. Weedon. People might mistakenly think you a closet RC! :)

Dr. Nagel spoke at a Central Illinois
District Conference in the 1980's.
During the Q/A session most of the
pastors shook their heads because
Dr. Nagel could not relate to their
parish concerns on his assigned topic

It seems that even his writing is
difficult to understand unless you
enjoy long sentences with repetition
of nouns and adverbs ad infinitum.

I have never found him the least bit difficult to understand. Can't say the same about some pastors I've heard rattle on...

Well, I don't know about "some" pastors who didn't think Dr. Nagel couldn't relate to their parish concerns, but I've found as I've gotten further out in the ministry that Dr. Nagel speaks directly to most of the real concerns of ministry, Law/Gospel, faith vs doubt & uncertainty, worldliness vs holiness, etc, etc.

And as for his writing, well, it's similar to what's been said about Christianity. It's not been tried & found wanting; it's been tried & found hard & so abandoned by those who don't want to grapple with it.
