In Holy Scripture and in experience there is to be found a twofold fear of God. First there is
timor servile, a servile fear, in that a person fears God like a slave before his master and out of fear of punishment if he undertakes some evil. Secondly,
timor filialis, a childlike fear as when a child shies away from his father and out of love guards himself from enraging him.—Johann Gerhard,
Schola Pietatis, III:77.
In God’s reckoning of time, the end is always near, even if by our manner of telling time it is millenniums away.—C. F. W. Walther, God Grant It!, p. 444.
