I don't think he's guilty of special pleading. There are clearly facts of Lutheran history he was not familiar with (Dr. Tighe brought some of those up), but he seems to give a fair description of the opposing views on the side of Rome and the Reformed in general. He mostly lets them state their positions in their own words, and then he critiques them.

I've learned from Krauth, but the book is a bit too tendentious for my taste.
