Great O's

Reminder that tonight, at Vespers, the Church begins praying the Great O Antiphons. You can find them in LSB next to the hymn based on them: #357 "O Come, O Come, Emmanuel." Today's Antiphon is:

O Wisdom, proceeding from the mouth of the Most High, pervading and permeating all creation, mightily ordering all things: Come and teach us the way of prudence.

O come, Thou Wisdom from on high,
Who orderest all things mightily,
To us the path of knowledge show
And teach us in her ways to go.
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
Shall come to Thee, O Israel.

My soul magnifies the Lord...

According to the note under hymn# 357 in LSB the O'Antiphons WERE used at Vespers (but not anymore).

The "were used" denotes their history, and recognizes the fact that in most parishes churches daily Vespers is no longer a reality. Sadly, daily Vespers are basically unknown in any parish Church of whatever confession. Tis a pity. But I'm just getting ready to head over and pray Vespers in St. Paul's sanctuary. And the "were" will be "are" in our case. Pax!
