Old Lutheran Quote of the Day

I do not reject John the Baptist, I honour him, and I exalt him highly. But I must make a difference between him and his ministry and life, and Christ to whom he testifies. He is a bondman and a servant, not the Lord. He points and leads to the true light, but is not the light itself. His ministry is greater and nobler than that of all the prophets, for he not only prophesies about the coming of the Lord, that He will come sooner or later; the rather he points to Him at this moment with His finger: Lo, this is He! -- Blessed Martin Luther, Exposition of John 1 (Day by Day, p. 32)
