Old Lutheran Quote of the Day

The Holy Spirit is the intercessor for the Father and the Son with us, and thus leads us actually to accept with the heart those most blessed gifts which the Father and Son offer us. -- C. P. Krauth, *Conservative Reformation* p. 497.

Forgive me, but this strikes me as an odd expression. An intercessor *with us*? Wouldn't one expect the motion to go the other way--e.g. "The Holy Spirit is the intercessor for us with the Father and the Son?" Since you cited this, perhaps you could comment?

Genuinely perplexed here...

I too would have expected the other way around, Father, and that's what I found rather interesting about the way Krauth expressed it. The context, though, is not that of presenting prayers, but of accepting the gifts offered. 1 Cor. 2:9ff. I think may be a bit of the background. Yet it is as striking inversion of the usual way of expressing it.

I don't know if I expressed that clearly, so here goes: the Father and the Son have gifts that they desire for us to receive; and the Holy Spirit is the one who pleads with us to receive and accept those blessed gifts from them.
