I've wondered about this. If sinners didn't die, they would merely go on decaying ad infinitum until they just came to rest somewhere, suffering. Dorian Grey would look like a Barbie doll compared to what would become. So the death for the sinner, while unnatural and unintended, would be an act of mercy, no?
