Old Lutheran Quote of the Day

For what is asserted without the Scriptures or proven revelation may be held as an opinion but need not be believed.—Blessed Martin Luther, AE 36:29.

A couple of questions:

Luther contrasts two alternatives: holding an opinion and believing. What about what we practice, either individually or liturgically as a Church? How does that fit in?

Luther speaks of "the Scriptures or proven revelation." What counts as "proven revelation" other than the Scriptures?

Finally, Luther is himself making an assertion here. Where is this assertion in the Scriptures? Or is Luther's assertion something that may be held as an opinion but need not be believed?
