New Lutheran Quote of the Day

If being a Christian is something that makes you groan, you have almost certainly got it wrong.  -- Dr. Norman Nagel, Selected Sermons, p. 175.

so, then did St. Clement get it wrong (cf. today's Patristic quote of the Day), since tears and groaning go together?

Not at all. The cause of the groaning is not being a Christian; the groaning arises from everything in our lives that hinders our living out of BEING Christians. The being Christian part is pure joy.

P.S. What on earth are you doing up at 2:39? Same thing I am, I suppose. Well, a good jump on Matins, no?

I should have known better than to try to parse words with you at 2:30 in the morning. or any time for that matter. Though I still think the being Christian does involve groaning, though of a different type than the worldly sorrow St. Paul tells us about. Also consider Psalm 51.
and when I saw you had already commented, the same question went through my mind about you. yes, same thing you're doing awake... though I don't think your son woke you up calling out your name. and you probably have a working AC. ours gave out yesterday. Repair guy should be here in about 12 hours.
