The Festival of St. Mary Magdalene

"Apostle to the Apostles."

Speak, Mary, declaring
What you saw when wayfaring:

"The tomb of Christ, who is living
The glory of Jesus' resurrection;
Bright angels attesting,
The shroud and napkin resting.
My Lord, my hope, is arisen.
To Galilee He goes before you."

Christ indeed from death is risen,
Our new life obtaining.
Have mercy, victor King, ever reigning!
Amen.  Alleluia.

Holy St. Mary, pray to God for us.

I appreciate her position as one who was sent to tell the apostles of Jesus' rising. But don't you think that in this era of "female apostleship" that it might be better to avoid that specific language?

I know it's nitpicky, but I've heard so many times that because Jesus sent women to proclaim his rising, that made them apostles...

George, it is her historic title in the church. She is not an apostle to the Church; she is an apostle strictly to the apostles. In Treasury's reading today the title was attributed to St. Bernard; but I think it is older than that. The Orthodox use it also.
