Dr. John Stephenson in a wonderful little piece in the Jobst Schöne Festschrift, pointed out that one of our dear Christmas hymns rather misses the boat in English. "Let All Together Praise Our God."
Here's the German for stanza six:
Er wechselt mit uns wunderlich
Fleisch und Blut nimmt er an
Und gibt uns in sein's Vaters Reich
*Die klare Gottheit dran.*
Literally rendered:
He exchanges with us wondrously:
Flesh and blood He assumes
And gives to us in His Father's Kingdom
The luminous divinity.
He took on all that is ours by nature that all that is His might become ours by grace. What a glorious thought for this eleventh day of the Christmas Feast. Indeed,
Gott sei Lob, Ehr', und Preis!
Gott sei Lob, Ehr', und Preis!
