Praying the Catechism

In the name of the Father...
Amen.

I believe in God the Father almighty...

Glory be to the Father...

Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner.

You shall have no other gods.
Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner.

You shall not misuse the name of the Lord, your God.
Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner.

Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy.
Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner.

Honor your father and your mother.
Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner.

You shall not murder.
Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner.

You shall not commit adultery.
Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner.

You shall not steal.
Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner.

You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.
Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner.

You shall not covet your neighbor's house.
Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner.

You shall not covet your neighbor's wife, his manservant or maidservant, his ox or donkey, or anything that is your neighbors.
Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner.

He says: I, the Lord, your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sins of the fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me.
Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner.

But showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments.
Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner.

Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner.

Glory be to the Father...

Our Father...

Bless we the Lord,
Thanks be to God.

This is so good. Has it ever appeared anywhere else?

Ginnie,

I don't think so. It's just a way I've found useful to pray the Catechism. And I actually work my way through the Ten Commandments four times. I find it a very useful way to pray as I head into work (or sometimes home from work) each day. Pax!

As friend has sent me a prayer rope that is used in the East for counting prayers. I tried to think of a way Lutherans might find a prayer tool like this useful and I remembered that people say, "Pray the catechism." So I wonder, wound one have 10 knots on the road for the 10 Commandments (or 20 with meanings). Then 7 or 14 knotes for the 7 petitions of the Lord's Prayer, and on to the Creed and others. Instead of helping you count the same prayer over and over, it would be a memory help for praying the catechism. Of course, I don't think I'd use it while driving, but facing an icon of Jesus at particular times. There are at certain points on the rope metal beads and separators, so having a larger metal bead would tell you you've finishe one part and it's time to start the next. It would be interesting to think out how something like this could work, whether ever used.
