Sweet!

Because we'll be traveling on father's day, I got my father's day present a little early: a new bike. And THIS is the kind of bike even I understand. No ten speed. No three speed. Simple ONE speed. And you break by back pedaling. That's MY kind of bike - the kind I remember from being a kid. Cindi and I took out our bikes for an evening ride (no way you could call this "the cool of the day" though), and it worked like a charm. Effortless. Light, aluminum frame. Only thing that I'm not crazy about is cosmetic: It's WHITE. And it has a patriotic theme on the thingy covering the whatchemacallit that turns with the pedal. I am really looking forward to some long rides on the new bike trails around here.

didn't you not too long ago get a new bike? based on your post, it must have been too complicated.

in fact, it has not even been a year yet...

Yup. But that bike turned out to be AWFUL. At first I thought it was just me, but the kids confirmed it: it wasn't working well. I couldn't up with Cindi when we went out - and I tried every gear setting on the danged thing. Today, I kept up no problem at all. This new bike feels very much like the bikes I remember (never having had a ten speed before) and I never could remember to use the HAND breaks; so the back pedaling is wonderful!!!

I keep forgetting - one speed would do you just fine in your part of this flat state...
multiple speeds are a little more useful around here where it starts (but only starts) to get a few hills... (can't wait to see real hills again on our vacation to California in two weeks)

I remember my one speed bike with the back pedaling. However I eventually wound up with a twenty-one speed bike. I think that's the one in my parent's garage. I really need to dig it out now that I am two years out of college....

If you're going to do a one-speed correctly, you need one joker card and a clothes pin. Attach the playing card to the rear fender support so the card touches the spokes of the tire. Enjoy your youth again.

Dennis,

I REMEMBER doing that!!! But I'd forgotten all about it until now.

Daniel,

Ah, get rid of that complicated thing and pick yourself up a one-speed!!! :)

Hey, Rev Leistico, which part of Cali are you comin' to?

P-Dub: you got a bike like I had as a kid! If I didn't have massive hills over here, I would get a coaster again. Breaking backwards is fun.

You break by back-pedaling? Best be careful then...we wouldn't want bits of pastor scattered all over the state. ;-)

(I think you mean "brake")

Maria! You got me!!! I didn't catch that one at all.

Lucciola, the area where Cindi and I grew up in MD had plenty of hills. We both lived on the side of hills. Flat was relatively sparse.

Oh, man, she got me too!!

Pastor Weedon,

Complicated? I'm the guy who in his college calculus class would joke, "Eh, just write a program for it."
