Patristic Quote of the Day

As, therefore, it then came to pass that whoever looked at the raised serpent was both healed of the poison and freed from death, so also now, whosoever is conformed to the likeness of the death of Christ by faith in Him and His baptism, is freed both from sin by justification, and from death by resurrection. For this is what He says: That whosoever believes in Him should not perish, but have eternal life. John 3:15 -- St. Augustine, *On Merit and the Forgiveness of Sins* Book I:61

Thank you for all your Augustine quotes, Pastor Weedon.

You're very welcome. He's such a joy to read (usually...). The more I read in him, the more I like him. Most of all I like the homilies, though. I wish there were more of those on line.

You must read his sermons, as translated in the Augustine for the 21st century series. Excellent, clear, modern, up-to-date English that truly captures the genius of his preaching style.

His sermon on the "ten stringed harp" and building an entire sermon on the phrase to preach on the Ten Commandments is simply stunning.
