A Query

So, if we were to put together a seminar here in Southern Illinois which featured learning how to use the LSB to the max, with help on the psalm tones, the choices in the rubrics, three year vs. one year, and so forth - would anyone be interested in attending such a thing? Think Zion's St. Michael's, but in an LSB tonality. Takers? We've discussed it for some years, but we've not got it off the ground, but I'm thinking that it's time may have come.

Seen as I live in northern Minnesota and not southern Illinois, I probably should butt out of this discussion...but what I would appreciate is some advice on doing more with LSB when you are...how do I put this mildly..."organist-challenged?"

That sounds great and I would definitely try and come.

I'm on the wrong side of the pond to attend, but having been a participant in something of this sort in the past, I can't recommend it too highly.

I'd probably come... but your crawling goddaughter would probably stay home (her twin is working on pulling up to stand now... we're in trouble.)

My Dh and I would be interested... of course, we'd have to work around organ tuning season and the choir directing schedule, but we'd definitely try and make it.

Ah, the organist challenge bit! Been there, done that. Huge problem. My solution would likely not be terribly welcome, but I'll offer it anyway: the liturgy and our chorales are drop dead gorgeous even when sung unaccompanied! It brings the words to the foreground. In the upcoming CD from CPH with the liturgies of Daily Prayer on it, occasionally the organ is used, but most it is unaccompanied. The organ sticks out like a sore thumb in them, in my opinion. Organs are great and can be a blessing indeed, but no Organ music is better than so-so stuff, and since many of our "organists" are in fact pianists, if an instrument is to be used, why not use the one they actually know how to play? Not what you were looking for, I'm sure, but it's what came to mind off the cuff as it were, Matthew.

Or your congregation could pay to send your pianist-arm-twisted-into-organist to one of the Organist workshops held at the Fort Wayne Sem every summer.

See how much more practical Jen is than I am? She's quite right about that too. Or, as the COW used to sponsor the Lutheran Musician Enrichment workshops all around the country with the same objective. Our organist attended and learned a lot!

I would be interested, though, I think I may need to wait a year before I'd go.

May I suggest possibly combining this with Trinity's/HRC's Liturgical Conference.

Another idea may be to put together something of regional "learn the LSB" conferences that could be directed towards the laity (as I think it may be a tough sell to make such a trek and take that kind of time off). Heck... I may just run with this idea in our circuit.

Heck, I even might come out for something like that... :-)

John,

Of course you would. You would be one of the speakers!
