District Convention

Began tonight with the Divine Service and will run through tomorrow and noon Saturday. Blogging will be scarce to non-existent, but I do covet your prayers for the pastors and parishes of the Southern Illinois District of the Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod as we meet together.

My prayers are with you. Please let us know if you have the chance whether Herb is reelected.

I just came home for lunch between sessions. Herb Mueller was re-elected Pres. A resolution to support Fan Into Flames was replaced with a resolution to support a district mission plan. Kieschnick stated he is not nor will he sue about the Issues Etc trademark.

I'm quite proud of our district. Some really good work today. We renewed our partnership with the Lutheran Church of Southern Africa - and Bishop Tswaede and a layman from the Church were in attendance. As Mary noted, we soundly rejected a resolution to encourage involvement in "Fan into Flame." We voted to ask the Blue Ribbon committee to leave the Districts as they are and to not alter the balance of a lay/clergy by permitting commissioned minister to replace the laity. We had some good dialog with the representatives for the Blue Ribbon Committee (I think they walked away realizing we weren't in favor of most anything they were proposing). Matt Harrison gave a phenomenal Bible study and presentation. One of our older pastors said to me afterwards: "Has anyone thought of HIM being Synodical President?" Um, YEAH! I've even got a slogan for him: Harrison - change we can believe in. Seems like I heard it somewhere before...

Oh, and we also voted to continue our already extensive prison work and to expand it by reaching ex-offenders and bringing them into our parish life (the "free in Christ" program that Deaconess Sandy Bowers is putting together); and we voted to continue to support the phenomenal mission we have in East St. Louis through Paul Miller's work with the "Mission School." I admit to being more than skeptical when this first brought up - more fool I. Paul Miller is simply one of God's amazing servants and he has a heart and passion for bringing the Gospel to the children of East St. Louis. The school has taken off big time. We love it when the children from Unity come to visit our parish school.
